About the Department

Established in the year 1992, the Department offers M.Sc., PG Diploma and Ph.D. programmes in Biotechnology. The students are admitted by selection through the entrance examination conducted on all India basis.

The Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India has been supporting our M.Sc. Biotechnology teaching programme.  To augment the infrastructure facility and vibrant research, the members of the faculty attract extramural funding from both national (UGC, DBT, DST, CSIR, AICTE and BRNS) and international (Rockefeller Foundation and Danish Government) agencies. The publications coming out from the Department attest the exemplary of research work carried out in the Department.

The Department is equipped with spacious laboratories with state-of-the art facilities such as Cold room, Photo-documentation, Plant tissue culture, Biosafety, Animal cell culture and Animal house. The Department also has equipment such as high speed refrigerated centrifuges, UV-Vis spectrophotometer, Bioreactor system, Fermenter, CO2 incubators, CO2-O2 Incubator, Electrophoresis apparatus, Electroporator, Gel documentation and chemiluminescent system, Multimode reactor, PCR, Realtime PCR, Flash Chromatography, HPLC, GC, LCMS, Vacuum concentrator, TG and 2D Electrophoresis (IEF), Flow cytometer, Lyophilizer, Luminometer, MACS (Magnetic Active Cell Sorter) Phase contrast, Fluorescence and Inverted Microscopes, -80o C deep freezers, Ultrasonicator, Luminescence Spectrometer and Microplate Spectrofluorimeter.

The Department receives research grants from different funding agencies like DBT, DST, UGC, CSIR, AYUSH, AERB, ICMR, MOES, Puducherry Government and Industries. The Department is supported by the DST-FIST and the UGC-SAP programmes.
