Ph.D. Biotechnology
The Ph. D program in Biotechnology offered in the department encompasses research in 9 different aspects based on the expertise of each faculty. As per the mandate of UGC, all the students are admitted through the All India entrance exam and they need to complete the research methodology and research ethics courses during their Ph.D. tenure. Based on the funding from various agencies earned by the individual faculty members and as a team the research outcome of the Department is high and it is attested by the research publications and the citations coming out from the Department (h-index: 62 & i10 index: 251). The research scholars with their fellowships from various agencies (UGC/CSIR/DBT/ICMR) do good science in both basic and applied research and file patents too. The research in the department is broadly focused on Basic Research and Applied Research in various domains such as Marine Biotechnology, Plant Biotechnology, Food Biotechnology, and Medical Biotechnology. Some of the niche areas of research include Molecular Epigenetics, Biogenic Nanomaterials, Stem Cell Biology, Drug Discovery and Development, Free Radical Biology, Micropropagation by plant tissue culture, Host-Microbe Interaction and Pathogenomics, Immunobiology, and Bioprospecting of Natural Products (Microbes, Flora & Fauna) for various applications. The well-established laboratories with sophisticated equipment cater to hands-on skill development to all the scholars. The research scholars completing their doctoral program in the department are well placed in acclaimed positions in academic institutions, research laboratories, and industries both in India and abroad.
Focus Areas
.
of the program
Bioprospecting of Natural Products (Microbes, Flora & Fauna)
Almost 70% of the faculty in the department are into bioprospecting of natural products which includes microbes both bacterial and fungal strains from various habitats; flora includes both marine and terrestrial plants and lastly from fauna which includes insects, shrimps, birds and animals from different habitats. Some of the isolated leads are being checked for their role in various biological activities including epigenetic modulations.
Plant Biotechnology
"As part of the thrust on Plant Biotechnology, 30% of the faculty work on molecular markers for plant breeding and plant regeneration capacity, Optimization of tissue culture protocols for micropropagation of economically important and endangered plants; Establishment of cell and protoplast cultures for the production of bioactive metabolites. Construction of antimicrobial gene cassettes for enhancing disease resistance in crop plants is being studied. "
Medical Biotechnology
Cutting edge research in areas of Medical Biotechnology in our department covers both basic and applied research contributed by nearly 50 % of the faculty. The major thrust areas under Medical Biotechnology are (i) Stem Cell biology and its applications (ii) Nosocomial Bacterial Infections and Multiple Drug Resistance, (iii) Host-Pathogen Interaction and Immunobiology, (iv) PathoGenomics. (v) Biogenic Nanomaterials and their applications, (vi) Drug discovery and development and (vii) Probiotics in health and disease
Basic Science Research
"Nearly 30 % of the faculty are into research related to fundamental basic sciences. Research on Fungal taxonomy from various habitats has helped in identifying new species and genera. The fundamental research on epigenetic modulation and cancer biology has unraveled interesting findings and fetched in publications in highly rated journals "
