About

Equity of access to higher education calls for efforts to provide opportunities for person with various types of disabilities for inclusion in university system. In this endeavor Pondicherry University has initiated measures that won the National Role Model Institutions Award of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment in the year 2011. In pursuance of this mission, the enabling cell is established to consolidate and co-ordinate the renowned legacy of this disabled friendly institution.

Vision

Inclusive institution, accessible infrastructure and equity in higher education for persons’ with disabilities

Objectives

  • To mainstream the requirements of disabled persons providing barrier free access to buildings, equipment, repositories and other resources of this university

  • To extend facilities to disabled persons to avail the benefits of different streams of higher education

  • To enhance the competence of differently abled students to equip them to meet academic and career challenges

  • To engender public sensitization about the challenges, issues, capabilities and rights of person with disabilities

  • To craft the admission, administration and recruitment policies ensuring equal opportunities for the persons with disabilities

Staff

  • 5% of seats in each course are reserved for differently abled candidates.
  • Each differently abled candidate shall be required to submit a certificate from a government hospital indicating the extent of physical disability and also the extent to which the disability hampers the candidate in pursuing his/her studies.
  • The candidates may have to undergo a fresh medical examination if required by the University before being admitted.
  • All differently abled candidates who have passed the qualifying examination are eligible to apply for PG admission irrespective of the percentage of marks obtained in the qualifying examination except otherwise specified.

The university departments and hostel buildings have ramps for the easy access. The students with disabilities are provided accessible accommodation in the hostel (free of cost).

HEPSN Enabling unit of Pondicherry University has been providing exclusive library facilities for student with special needs since 2010 onwards.

  • International disability day is being celebrated every year, by HEPSN enabling unit of PU since 2010
  • Special sports events such as Chess (Visually Challenged vs. Sighted), Cricket (Physically Challenged vs. Abled), Tug of War (Differently able vs. Abled) Athletics (among differently abled), are being conducted on the occasion of International Disability Day
