PROF.V. Venkateswara Sarma did his M.Sc. and M.Phil. in Botany from R.K.M. Vivekananda College, Chennai and a Ph.D. on a topic titled โBiodiversity of marine fungi colonizing mangrove substrata in Godavari and Krishna deltas, east coast of Indiaโ at CAS in Botany, University of Madras, India, during 1993-1998, under Prof. B.P.R. Vittal. Subsequently he has done his first post-doctoral work with Dr. S. Raghukumar at National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), Goa, India (November 1998-June 1999). He did his second post-doctoral study with Prof. K.D. Hyde in the Department of Ecology and Biodiversity, University of Hong Kong (July 1999 โ May 2021). After his return to India, he was in industry briefly including at Biocon India Ltd (June 2001- May 2002). And then he has worked as a Senior Scientist in Shri A.M.M. Murugappa Chettiar Research Centre, Chennai from 2004 to 2008. In 2009 he has taken up a faculty position and is now working as a Professor in the Department of Biotechnology, Pondicherry University. Under his supervision 6 students were awarded with Ph.D. degrees and eight others are pursuing their Ph.D. He has been elected as a Fellow of Mycological Society of India (FMSI) in 2007. He has completed two research projects on fungal diversity including (i) Marine fungal diversity from Muthupet mangroves, Tamil Nadu (sponsored by MOES) and (ii) Ascomycetous fungal diversity from Andaman Islands (sponsored by SERB). Presently he is handling two new projects sponsored by MOES and SERB and another two recently got over.
He has more than 144 publications including 102 research articles (66 international and 38 national), 30 book chapters, 10 popular articles.

He is an Executive Council member and life member of Mycological Society of India (MSI) and Association for Microbiologists of India (AMI). He is an Associate Editor of Current Research in Environmental and Applied Mycology (CREAM) Journal, Kavaka and MycoAsia. He is also a reviewer of several mycological journals including Botanica Marina, Mycosphere, Mycology, Fungal Biology, Fungal Ecology, Kavaka, CREAM, Fungal Biology and Biotechnology, Mycoasia.
