About
Research Area
I obtained Ph.D. from Delhi University, served as Fellow at Tata Energy Research Institute (TERI), New Delhi and worked until 1996. Then moved to Centre for Genetic Manipulation of Crop Plants, University of Delhi, South Campus and served as Senior Research Scientist until 2006. During that time, I did research on genetic improvement of Brassica crop with focus on genetic transformation, somatic cell hybridization, microspore culture in Brassica species. I was instrumental and core member of the group involved in development and public release of first ever cytoplasmic male sterility system hybrid seed DMH1 in mustard. Parallelly, involved in development and approval for release of GM mustard, DMH11. In 2006, I joined as Reader at Pondicherry University and rose to become full professor and pursued teaching, research, and research guidance. I have developed and established a Plant Tissue Culture Facility and an experimental garden facility at the University. My research interests include application of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology tools for crop improvement. I have guided nearly 25 M.Sc. and 6 Ph.D. students so far. I have received projects funded from national (DBT, CSIR, UGC, ICAR) and International (USFW). I am abreast of molecular biology techniques and aware of the regulatory procedures to be followed during development, characterization, and commercialization of transgenic plants. I have published over 60 research articles in peer reviewed National and International journals. I am an elected fellow of Academy of Sciences (Chennai), an elected member of Plant Tissue Culture Association of India (PTCAI) and Indian Association of Biomedical Scientists (IBMS). I have been member/member secretary/Chairperson of several committees including Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBSC), Institutional Human Ethics Committee (IHC), Patent Facilitation Cell, NEP implementation committee and Governing council for some affiliated colleges. Recently in January, 2024, I have organized a well-attended National symposium on Recent Advances in Plant Biotechnology under the auspices of PTCAI, Pune.
