About the Department

The Department of Chemistry at Pondicherry University is a leader of the molecular revolution, addressing the most challenging and important questions in the physical and life sciences of the 21st century. By leveraging its multi-disciplinary vision, its culture of synergistic collaboration and translational science, and its excellence in the physical, biological and engineering sciences, the department with its distinguished faculty and alumni is opening new fields and frontiers and fundamentally new and innovative ways to address the increasingly complex scientific, health, energy and environmental problems of our time. Since its inception in 1989, the department has been is engaged in imparting the highest level and quality of academic education and has focused upon addressing key scientific problems, which have gathered worldwide appreciation and recognition. The department has 16-member faculty expertise in frontier level of research and have had the exposure and scope to carry out research of preliminary originality contributing genuinely towards the enhancement of academic and industrial interactions. We have contributed towards the publication of over 300+ research papers and 5 patents. There are about 10 ongoing research projects sponsored by various government organizations.

The research areas focused are: Organic Synthesis, Polymer Chemistry, Green Chemistry, Assymmetric Synthesis, Drug Design and Medicinal Chemistry, Organometallic Chemistry, Supramolecular Chemistry, Bio-Inorganic Chemistry, Inorganic Photo Chemistry, Nanomaterial, Physical Chemistry, Solid- State Chemistry, Magnetic Resonance, Theoretical Chemistry, Photocatalysis, Electro Chemistry, Crystal Engineering, Inorganic Photochemistry, Porphyrin Chemistry. The instrumental facilities present at the Department are: HRMS, NMR (400 and 60 MHz), EPR (X-band), Single Crystal XRD, FT-IR, GC-MS, HPLC, Atomic Absorption Spectrometer, C/H/ N/S analyzer, UV-Vis spectrometer, Fluorescence spectrometer and cyclic voltammeter. The Department has excellent computational facility and computer networking for both intra and internet facilities. Sophisticated instruments like XPS, AFM, HR-TEM are available in the centralized facility. Every faculty has individual laboratory with good research facilities to carry out specific-area of research. The scholars have access to several online journals and databases such as Sci-finder and Scopus. The faculties have research collaborations with other Departments of the University/National/International research laboratories. Scientific seminars, invited lectures and group discussions are constantly held for the benefit of Ph.D. research scholars and M. Sc. students. The Department also conducts national and international conferences and seminars to strengthen the research activities.

Sophisticated analytical instruments available in the Department of Chemistry, Pondicherry University and the details of User Fee charges are given below.  We welcome researchers to utilize them by paying required fees as per terms and conditions of Pondicherry University, Pondicherry, India.

a Amount is for the first 4 hours; Additional hours will be charged @ 1/4th charge per hour. b Along with each sample (of not more than 1 mg) 3 clean empty 2 mL glass vials of highest quality should be provided.  If not, handling charges of Rs.  200/- per sample will be levied. c Spectroscopic grade solvents should be provided by the user; if not additional charges of Rs. 200/- per sample will be levied.

  • Any researcher from outside the Department of Chemistry desirous of using the equipment may remit the appropriate amount of fees in the Pondicherry University Account (Old A/c No. 204, New No: 6659345681) by way of challan or submit a copy of electronic receipt of online payment made in the name of The Finance Officer, Pondicherry University (A/c No. 6659345681, IFSC code: IDIB000P152) Indian Bank, Pondicherry University Branch).  Contact Address: The Professor & Head, Department of Chemistry, Pondicherry University, Puducherry, 605014. Outgoing Ph.D. and M.Sc. students find employment in leading pharmaceutical companies like Dr. Reddy Research Laboratories, Shasun Drugs, G.V.K. Biosciences, SRF, Orchid Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals Limited etc. Scholars/students find employment through campus interviews as well as by direct contact. The Research scholars after successful completion of Ph.D. get Postdoctoral position in renowned Universities/Institute in USA, Canada, Japan and European countries and some obtain faculty positions in colleges/universities. Some of the M.Sc. students qualify TOEFL and GRE and get admissions in USA, Canada and European Universities for Ph.D. programs.   The academic curriculum of the Department helps a good number of students to qualify in national level competitive examinations including NET, GATE, and to find placement in major pharmaceutical, chemical manufacturing, industries and as academic professionals in colleges and universities through campus recruitment and personal contacts. Research students have opportunities for post-doctoral positions in various international and national institutes through government agencies and personal contacts.
Research programs of the individual faculty are supported by national funding agencies such as DST, CSIR, UGC, AICTE etc. for about `3.0 Crores and also the Department is supported (around ` 250 lakh) by special funding through DST – FIST program. Recently, the Department has been recognized by the UGC through UGC-SAP(DSA-I) program and sanctioned Rs. 1.80 crore.   Premier national funding agencies such as DST, CSIR, UGC and AICTE support research work of the faculty members. Apart from individual major sponsored research projects by the faculty members, the department is also supported by the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India through FIST (Level-I) program and by the University Grants Commission through UGC-SAP (DSA-I) program to aim for higher impact research activities.
