About the Department
Department of Economics is one of the founding Departments in the Pondicherry University, established on 15th December 1986. The Department offers post graduate and research programmes that enable the students to acquire both the theoretical knowledge and technical skills. The Department has emerged as one of the leading centres which imparts training in the field of applied econometrics and conducts regular programmes and workshops for Government officials, researchers and policy makers. The student and faculty composition in the Department is drawn from the length and breadth of the country. The Department provides ample scope for faculty members and students to interact with leading academicians from the country and also from abroad as they are regularly invited through various training programmes, conferences, seminars and workshops conducted in the Department. There are number of projects undertaken by the faculty members funded by Reserve Bank of India, various Ministries of Govt. of Puducherry & Govt. of India, ICSSR, UGC, ICAR etc. Besides, faculty members have published research papers in reputed journals.

Infrastructure
The Department is housed in the School of Management building with spacious air conditioned classrooms.
All classrooms are Wi-Fi enabled and fitted with large LED screens for effective classroom teaching using ICT tools.
The department also has a well-equipped computing lab with access to large number of e-resources like journals and databases subscribed by the University library in order to supplement classroom teaching along with research at all levels.
Thrust Area of Teaching & Research
The thrust areas of research in the Department include Agricultural Economics, Applied Statistics and Econometrics, Development Economics, Economic Demography, Economic Theory, Environmental Economics Financial Economics, Health Economics, Industrial Economics, Labour Economics, Monetary economics, Microfinance, Open-economy Macroeconomics and Public Finance. Faculty members and Ph.D. scholars of the Department have published a large number of research papers in the above areas, in reputed national and international journals in economics along with several books and book chapters, newspaper articles and technical reports.
Achievements
Every year a good number of students from the Department qualify for UGC-NET/JRF, SLET and GATE examinations. Besides, students have also done exceptionally well in GRE, IELTS etc.
Placement & Internships
Alumni of the Department are employed as faculty members in various Central Universities, IITs, IIMs and other reputed educational institutions across the world; as executives/managers in multinational companies and banks, and also in various government services through UPSC and state PSCs. Many of the students of our Department are pursuing Ph.D. with fellowships in IIMs, IITs, other Central Universities and reputed institutes of higher learning in economics such as JNU, New Delhi; IIT Delhi; IIT Madras; IIM Kozhikode; CDS, Trivandrum; ISEC, Bangalore; IIPS and TISS, Mumbai; IFMR, MIDS and MSE, Chennai, etc. Students pursuing their Postgraduate programme have also interned at various corporate firms and research institutes such as PwC, New Indian Express, IHD, IIMAD,NIPFP, IIT Bhubaneswar to name a few.
