About the Department

Centre for Ocean and Island Studies was established in the year 2000 and was upgraded as a full-fledged Department of Ocean Studies and Marine Biology in 2004. This Department is spread in a sprawling campus of its own of 12.5 acres in Port Blair, the picturesque capital city of the Andaman and Nicobar group of islands. The Department has well equipped infrastructural facilities with laboratories and equipment for both the academics and research activities with extramural funding from UGC, DST and MoES. The Department location in Port Blair has close proximity with the marine environment with uniqueness of having distinct Coral, mangrove and Island ecosystems. Students who join the programs are trained well in depth in the field of Marine Biology. The mandate of the program is in exploring these ecosystems for their biological resources and developing strategies for sustainable management and conservation.

The Department offers both M.Sc. and Ph.D. Program in Marine Biology through Entrance Examination conduncted by the University at certain centres all over India. Students for the Masters program are admitted based on the rank obtained by them in the Entrance Exam and all students enrolled are offered a studentship of Rs. 1000 per month who put in 70% attendance. Students for the Ph.D program are admitted based on the rank obtained in the Entrance Exam and their performances in the Interview.

Vision and Message of Head of Department

Dr. Gadi Padmavati

  • Professor

Pondicherry University, specifically its Department of Ocean Studies and Marine Biology, established a Marine Biology course in Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, to study marine ecosystems and resources. This includes research in coral reefs, mangrove ecosystems, and island environments, with a focus on understanding and managing these fragile ecosystems. The department offers both M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in Marine Biology. The Port Blair campus is situated in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, providing a unique environment for studying marine biology and coastal ecosystems. The course and research focus on the study of oligotrophic waters, which are characterized by low nutrient levels and high water clarity, common in reef environments. The department offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in Marine Biology, providing students with in-depth knowledge and training in the field. A key goal of the program is to develop strategies for sustainable management and conservation of marine resources, including coral reefs and coastal ecosystems. This department’s research has gained international recognition, as evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals and collaborations with other research institutions.

The establishment of a remote island campus in the Andaman Islands, focused on advanced Marine Science, has been a significant success, producing over 700 M.Sc. and 73 Ph.D. graduates in 23 years. The department also identified and published more than 10 new-to-science species from the marine ecosystem of the Andaman Islands, bringing international recognition to island studies. This campus has cultivated a strong base in Marine Biology and related sciences, offering opportunities for deep-sea studies and other research. The Andamans’ unique environment, with sandy shores, mangroves, and rocky areas, provides a suitable location for these studies
