M.Sc. Electronic Media

The two-year M.Sc. Electronic Media programme was launched in 2007 as part of Centre for Electronic Media, Pondicherry University. Currently, the Post Graduate programme is offered at the Department of Electronic Media and Mass Communication, Pondicherry University. The staple focus of the programme is to nurture the creative skills of students in television production, visual design, graphic design, animation, audio and video editing besides providing them a thorough understanding of web development and e-content development. Students also learn the principles and practices of journalism, media laws and ethics, digital convergence etc. Primarily, the programme aims to provide them with critical and latent skills to produce audio-visual content such as documentaries, short films, interactive documentaries, immersive media content to name a few. The short films and documentaries made by the department students are showcased to the outside world at various international film festivals including Pondicherry International Documentary and Short Film Festival that the department has organised for nine years consecutively.

Television & Video Production

Students are trained to produce different genres of televisual content. They learn how to write scripts and gain a firm grasp of camera handling for indoor and outdoor productions. In other words, they are taught all facades of the aesthetics of television and video production in an organic manner. The programme aims to provide professional hands-on training to students in the field of Television, Radio and other Digital media production with the state of art infrastructure facilities available at the Department of Electronic Media and Mass Communication. It has one of the biggest double height TV studios in academic institutions in the country along with a shooting floor, a PCR with video mixer, Audio Mixer, VTR, lights, Chroma keyer, teleprompter etc., The students are trained on the role of the crew and the workflows involved in indoor and multi-camera production with HD cameras and full PCR setup. Students also receive professional training on audio and video editing using the latest software.

Visual Design: Graphic Design/Animation/E-Learning

Students are taught graphic design, communication design, UI design including 3D animation, photography, illustration and visual art. Whether it is the choice of typography, a corporate logo, or the layout of a newspaper, magazine or web design, graphic designers are required to create visuals to communicate ideas and solve a problem. Further, they are also trained on animation principles and practices. Using 3D modelling software, students develop their skills in 3D modelling, and texturing of characters and objects. In addition to classroom teaching and lab-based production, students will be instructed by industry professionals to gain more insights on Graphic Design Concepts, Creative Innovation and Entrepreneurship. In that respect, this two-year programme is tailor made to cater to those who want to land plum assignments in design domain in the industry. Design skills are also part of e-content development and appropriate training is provided professionally on designing creative and engaging e-learning courses. This helps students to get placed in IT industries as UI designers, web designers and graphic designers etc.

Theories and Media Research

There is visual in everyday life. Understanding the role of visuals and asking questions about them systematically and scientifically requires one to have a foot in research and theories. Students, in addition to production works, are taught to engage with and examine a wide range of media genres and platforms, from soap operas to televise news to reality television, online games, films and documentaries, from photography to social media selfies and images. Students acquire theoretical and methodological proficiency to question the role of images from social, cultural, economic and political perspectives. Students also learn theories of journalism, visual design, media convergence, film semiotics, to name a few.

Documentary and Short film making

If documentary film making is your passion, this programme helps you in bringing your ambition to life. Students get to watch a range of world’s best documentary films as well as the ones produced on local cultures. Prior to making documentaries, it is the grasp of social issues and interesting themes students need to have a clarity about. This programme touches upon such subjects theoretically and practically on issues that concern society from political, social, cultural and economic perspectives. Having identified the topic of their choice, students learn how conceive their ideas, transform them into scripts and capture them in the form of visuals stitched through a powerful narrative. Documentaries produced by them showcase their understanding of the subject they handle as well as their technical finesse. Students also learn about the process of editing, camera handling and related technical knowledge. Short films, that require creative writing and film making techniques, are another area of interest that students will be trained to experiment with. The aim of the course is to help students become literate in the language and grammar of documentary and short film making and learn basic concepts, techniques, and terminology in an effort to appreciate the works.

Eligibility

Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of 55 % of marks in any discipline from a recognized university under 10+2+3 system. The Entrance Examination consists of 100 Multiple Choice Questions out of which 80 questions cover Media, Communication, Electronic & New Media, Media and Society, Visual Communication, Visual Culture, Television, Cinema, Graphics & Animation, Aesthetics, Sound, Media Management, Advertisement and 20 questions deal with English and test of reasoning.
