M.Sc. Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

The Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology was founded in 1987 as the Department of Biological Sciences under the aegis of the School of Life Sciences from which it has developed to its present form. Both UGC SAP & DST FIST II funds the department towards its basic infrastructure for teaching & research. The department offers Doctoral & Master Degree courses in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology. The department faculty are actively engaged in research in diverse areas as cancer biology, degenerative diseases, neuroengineering towards regenerative therapeutics, ageing biology & neurobiology with many faculties presently running projects from extramural agencies as DST, ICMR & DBT with present cumulative funding to the tune of ~ 2crores. The doctoral students form the driving force for moving forward the research in these key areas and the same is demonstrated in their research publications. The Master degree curriculum has been carefully designed to offer balanced learning of classical aspects while integrating the updated innovative knowhow within its core courses. The elective courses enable the students to explore their specific interests in diverse areas. The curriculum integrates within its core components a robust scope for practical training through lab courses, enables the best academic performers to take up research through dissertation studies and encourages all students to participate in Summer & Winter Research Fellowship Programs in national institutions of repute throughout India. Overall, the Master’s program provides a robust platform for the students to develop theoretical knowledge, hone practical skills, obtain research experience & stimulates their early potential. The department lays strong emphasis on its Master & Doctoral Degree Programmes and its various research & outreach activities revolve around providing better opportunities for the students and creating a more enabling environment for their learning and research.
