M.Sc. Applied Geology

The M.Sc. course is designed to develop a holistic understanding of various Earth System processes and impart skills to apply this knowledge to solve problems of global and national importance. Theory courses with a perfect blend of basic and applied branches of Geology, laboratory courses with world-class equipment facilities, intensive field training at best locations in the country and project work supported by modern laboratory facilities constitute the four integral pillars of the curriculum. The programme receives periodic revisions with an emphasis on preparing skilled and professional manpower to carry forward national scientific programmes. The Department is all set to start a 2 year M.Sc. in Applied Geophysics with prime objectives of strengthening the academic outreach of the Department on solid earth processes and geo-exploration techniques and paving a way for establishing student-centric academia-industry exchange programmes.

Focus Areas

of the program

Solid Earth Processes

Understanding igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary processes and their investigation using petrographic, geochemical and geophysical tools

Earth Surface Processes

Geomorphology; Rock weathering and sedimentary processes; Hydrogeology

Evolution of the Earth life through time

Micropaleontology, Paleontology, Stratigraphy: They have tangible connection to life, landscapes, climates of the past, and help understanding how life, landscapes, climate have changed over time and how living things responded to those changes, in addition to their application on exploration of mineral and fossil fuel resources.

Applied Aspects: Economic geology, exploration of earth resources, Remote Sensing & GIS, Hydrogeology

Characteristics and processes of formation of mineral and petroleum deposits. Geological and geophysical methods of mineral and petroleum exploration. Landform study, Lithological mapping and mineral exploration using Remote sensing and GIS. Groundwater study.
