« நிகழ்காலத்தில் வாழ்ந்து எதிர்காலத்தை வடிவமைக்கவும்… » = “Live in the present and shape the future…”, affirmed the distinguished writer and social reformer, Bharathiyar, whose name and fame emanated from Pondicherry. He was known as the Mahakavi whose passion for the Tamil language and literary treasures inspired many minds aspiring to illuminate the meandering streams of aesthetics.

In fact, at the time when Pondicherry University was established in October 1985, the School of Tamil was the prime School identified and it has steadfastly remained as the only primordial School perpetuating all linguistic developmental projects and Tamil studies from M.A. to Ph.D. in the entire Tamilnadu and Pondicherry.

With the successful completion of major UGC Projects, SAP Projects, and the organization of effective National and International Seminars, of innovative Programmes and functional Refresher Courses, of meaningful Endowment and Special Lectures, of interesting publications and Paper presentations in India and abroad — such as in Malaysia and Mauritius in the World Tamil Summits — by its Faculty and Scholars, the School of Tamil has created an indelible mark in the annals of Pondicherry University.
