About

NATIONAL CADET CORPS

The National Cadet Corps (NCC) came into existence on 15 July 1948 under an Act of Parliament. Over the years, NCC has spread its activities and values across the length and breadth of the country, in schools and colleges, in almost all the districts of India. It has attracted millions of young boys and girls to the ethos espoused by its motto, “unity and discipline.” It moulds them into disciplined and responsible citizens of the country. NCC has attained an enviable brand value in Young India’s mind space.

To raise a second line of defence and create a large pool of trained youth available for the Armed Forces during the First World War, the University Corps was conceptualised by the British Government. In India, NCC was raised to groom boys and girls, nurture them, and direct their energy towards nation-building by making them responsible citizens.

After independence, the present-day NCC formally existed on 15 July 1948 through the XXXI Act of Parliament. The Girls Division of the NCC was raised in July 1949. On 01 April 1950, the Air Wing was raised, with one Air squadron each at Bombay and Kolkata. The Naval Wing of the NCC was raised in July 1952, thus representing all three services in the Corps.

During the 1965 and 1971 wars with Pakistan, NCC cadets were the second line of defence. They organised camps to assist the ordinance factories, supplying arms and ammunition to the front. They were also used as patrol parties to capture the enemy paratroopers. The NCC cadets also worked hand in hand with the Civil Defence authorities and actively took part in rescue work and traffic control. After the 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pak wars, the NCC syllabus was revised. Rather than just being the second line of defence, the NCC syllabus laid greater stress on developing leadership and Officer-like qualities. The NCC cadets’ military training was reduced, and greater importance was given to other areas like social service and youth management.
