Research Area
Dr. V. Sivasankar is currently serving as a Professor in the Department of Economics, School of Management, Pondicherry University. Prior to joining Pondicherry University, he worked as an Assistant Professor and later as an Associate Professor in the Postgraduate and Research Department of Economics at Muthurangam Government Arts College (Autonomous), under Thiruvalluvar University, Vellore.
He has 18 years of distinguished teaching and research experience. Before beginning his academic career as an Assistant Professor, he was awarded a Ph.D. from the Centre for Economic Studies and Planning, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi. He completed his M.Phil. at the Centre for Research on New International Economic Order, Chennai. Earlier, he obtained his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Economics from Sacred Heart College (Autonomous), Tirupattur, Tamil Nadu, affiliated with the University of Madras, Chennai.
His areas of research include Development Economics, Labour Economics, and Environmental Economics. He has published three books and five edited volumes with reputed publishers. He has contributed 26 research articles to UGC-listed and Scopus-indexed journals, and 18 articles as book chapters. He has also translated one book from English to Tamil and regularly contributes articles to Tamil vernacular newspapers. Additionally, he has presented over 100 research papers at regional, national, and international seminars and conferences. He has undergone training in gender issue in labour at V.V. Giri National Labour Institute, Noida.
Under his guidance, four research scholars have been awarded Ph.D. degrees, and seven are currently pursuing their Ph.D. He has also supervised 15 M.Phil. scholars who successfully completed their research work.
Besides teaching and research, he has successfully completed four major research projects funded by prestigious agencies such as the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) and the University Grants Commission (UGC), Government of India. The projects include:
1. UGC Major Research Project: Changing Agrarian Relations and Labour Shortage in Labour Surplus Areas in Tamil Nadu.
2. ICSSR Major Research Project: Women Workers in the Leather Industry in Tamil Nadu.
3. ICSSR Major Research Project: A Case Study of Tannery Effluent and Its Impact on Agrarian Communities in Vellore District of Tamil Nadu.
4. Living Wage Survey among Jasmine Pickers – funded by Firmenich, in association with the Madras School of Social Work.
He has also organized eight national seminars and three research methodology workshops sponsored by ICSSR. In recognition of his academic contributions, he was awarded the Young Economist Award in 2017 by the Association of Economists of Tamil Nadu (AET) for excellence in academic research.
