Since 2007, I have worked as a faculty member in the Department of Performing Arts, Pondicherry Central University. My specialized areas are: acting and actor training, movements & choreography, Traditional theatre, and applied theatre in the Performing Arts. In my teaching career, I have won four ‘Best Teacher’ awards in Performing Arts – Pondicherry University, got a Puducherry state government award “Puduvai Kalaimamani (Drama – 2021)”, published twelve research papers, seven articles, four books, and have successfully guided ten PhD scholars and thirteen MPhil scholars in the field of Performing Arts. I directed five plays and acted in thirty-six play productions, which included three solo performances. During the COVID-19 pandemic under my HOD-I/c, I successfully gave six online lectures, produced two plays on COVID-19 awareness, and coordinated two online drama festivals in 2020 & 2022 with the Department of Art and Culture, Government of Puducherry. I have done a successful Online collaboration work on Intercultural Performance Studies with the University of Campinas, Brazil (2020 -2022).
I have completed two research projects: 1. on ‘Martial Arts – Silambam’ (UGC Minor Project: 2012-2014) and 2. on ‘Traditional Theatre – Therukuthu’ (ICSSR Minor Project: 2023-2025). Introduction of new courses in the syllabi of MPA (Drama and Theatre Arts), like: Acting Methods, Scene works, Theatre Games, Folk dance (Devarattam), and Street theatre. I gave two lectures on Indian modern theatre and the scope of drama and theatre in higher education on All India Radio, Puducherry.
In my industrial experience, I was an actor, actors’ trainer, theatre anchor-person in the well-known full-time repertoire of Koothu-P-Pattarai, a UNESCO Aschberg Bursary recognised Organisation, in Chennai (1992 – 2004). During my 12.5 years working in Koothu-P-Pattarai, I learnt various skills: 1. Theatre Techniques like: Realistic Acting, Clown, Stylized acting, Therukuthu, Theatre Exercises, Koodiyattam voice training, Movement & Choreography, and Improvisation; 2. Martial Arts like : Silambam, Tai-Chi-Chuan, Kalaripayattu, Tang-Ta, Kuthuvarisai ; 3. Dance forms like: Devarattam, Oyilattam, Thudumbattam, and skills related to yoga, Vipassana, folk songs, and solo performances.
I have been participating as the theatre resource person in the Mahabharata Immersion programmes since it was initiated in 2016 by Ritambhara, Kotagiri. It is a personal unfold method using theatre, yoga’s philosophy, management skills, and the epic of the Mahabharata in an integrated way. As a theatre anchor person in the organizations of TAO, Vadivam, and Ritambhara, I had completed 20 workshops on Stress management, Leadership, Self-Unfolding, and Learning through theatre programmes for well-known industries like Ashok Leland, TI, Rane Motors, Ramco, and Future Soft, Murugappa groups, etc.
In media industry, I acted in the animation movie “Pandavas – The Five Heros” (Penta Media, Chennai – 2000), TV short film for DD Podhigai Channel “Payanam Thodarkirathu” (2003), and radio dramas, “The last five seconds of Mahatma Gandhi” (1993) and “Rip Van Winkle” (1992) in All India Radio, Chennai.
I published the book of 133 paintings of my father on “Thiru Kural “Patharvellai Ramanathanin Thirukural Oviyangal (2009) and directed the Koothu-p-Pattarai’s repertoire play “The Pillar” in Chennai (2025).
