It is in this hallowed name and spirit that our School draws its identity and inspiration. Mahakavi Bharathi, with his electrifying words and eternal love for the Tamil language, continues to ignite the imagination of generations. True to his vision, we remain committed to fostering scholarship rooted in tradition while embracing the evolving contours of contemporary literary discourse.

A Legacy of Excellence

When Pondicherry University was founded in October 1985, the School of Tamil was among the first to be envisioned—an academic torchbearer in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry for advanced linguistic and literary studies. To this day, our School remains a primordial center of Tamil excellence, offering B.A. (Hons.), M.A., and Ph.D. programs, deeply aligned with national educational reforms and cultural enrichment.

We are proud to share that:

• The School has produced over 150 Ph.D. graduates, the highest number among language schools in the University.
• A prestigious Subramania Bharathi Chair has been established with financial assistance from the Central Government, further cementing our national standing in Tamil studies.
• Our faculty members are highly qualified, with outstanding academic credentials and national/international exposure.
• We go beyond classroom learning by offering Computer Literacy, Typewriting, and Shorthand Training—empowering students with practical skills for the modern world.
• The School organizes numerous special lectures through more than 14 active endowments, regularly inviting eminent scholars from across India to engage with our academic community.
• Our faculty members have authored numerous books and published research articles in reputed journals, contributing substantially to Tamil literature and academic thought.

With the successful completion of prestigious UGC Major Research Projects, SAP initiatives, and the organization of landmark national and international seminars, our School continues to shine on the global stage. Our faculty and scholars have presented papers and delivered lectures at international forums including Malaysia and Mauritius, and contributed richly to World Tamil Summits, Endowment Lectures, and acclaimed publications.
