Prof. S. BALAKRISHNAN obtained his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Geology from the University of Madras, Chennai and his doctoral degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.  He commenced his research career as a Post-Doctoral Fellow (PDF) in the Department of Earth and Space Sciences, State University of New York at Stony Brook, USA.  He started his academic career as a Lecturer at Department of Earth Sciences, I.I.T.,Roorkee, (formerly University of Roorkee).He joined as Professor of Earth Sciences, Pondicherry University, in 1997.
Education is the key enabler towards knowledge based society that integrates nature, aesthetics and technology to coexist harmoniously. A liberal university, like ours, with schools of arts, humanities, sciences, technology, medicine and law provides right ambience for holistic higher education. The University welcomes all those interested to learn and disseminate the knowledge gained.

Focus & Goals

Established a state-of-the-art National Facility for Isotope Geochemistry with a Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometer (TIMS) and a Clean Laboratory from the year 2007 at the Pondicherry University. As Dean of the School initiated 5 year Integrated M. Sc. Programs in Applied Geology, Chemistry and Physics, an unique and successful program of study in the Pondicherry University
