Dr. Joseph Selvin
About
Research Area
Dr. Selvin is a Fellow of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (FNAAS) and a well-established academic researcher in the field of Marine Microbiology and Metagenomics. His research is very unique in India, which was focused on “microbiome biology of marine sponges and corals”. His Ph.D. thesis work in the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute was selected for the award of “Jawaharlal Nehru Award (2003)” by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, considering his outstanding contribution in the field of Marine Biotechnology. Dr. Selvin’s research contribution is fully based in India. He has published 165 research articles in internationally reputed impact journals, with a cumulative impact factor now standing at>682, with Citations 13061, H-index 59, and i10 index 158.
He was granted a US patent (No. 9493792) in 2016, one Indian patent, and filed four Indian patents. He has developed two innovative technologies through his Ph.D. students, which were duly considered by DSIR for commercialization. He guided 19 Ph.D. students and 6 post-doctoral fellows. His early career research contributions were recognized by the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), which awarded him the INSA Young Scientist Medal (2006), INSA-Prof. L.S.S. Kumar award (2006) and INSA-Anil Kumar Bose award (2009) for his publication in Current Microbiology. He received DST Young Scientist project (2004), DBT Young Investigator project (2008), BOYSCAST fellowship (2010) and ICMR International Fellowship (2018).
He has handled 21 major research projects funded by DST, DST-International collaboration project (Indo-Ireland, Indo-Russia and Indo-Mexico), DBT, DBT-RGYI, MoES, UGC, INSA, CSIR, European Union, and IFS, Sweden. Dr. Selvin is a project partner from India in the global initiative on “Microbiome Support” funded by the European Commission (Horizon 2020). His current research initiatives, including metagenomics of sponge and coral-associated microbes, are a unique research venture, which would be the first in India, based on available literature.
