Dr. Basant K. Tiwary is a Professor at the Department for Bioinformatics, Pondicherry University. He has earlier served as a Visiting Associate Professor in the Li Lab of Molecular Evolution, The University of Chicago, USA (2007-08). His research focuses on the molecular evolution and systems biology of complex biological systems such as human brain and neuroendocrine system. He is also interested in understanding complex diseases such as cancer, type 2 diabetes and psychiatric diseases for effective diagnostics and therapeutics. He has been conferred various fellowships and academic recognitions such as Overseas Associateship in Niche Areas of Biotechnology (2006-2007) by the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India, New Delhi, Expert Member in Bioinformatics, University Grants Commission, New Delhi and offered ICCR Professorial Chair in Bioinformatics at Ain Shams University, Cairo (2017).

He has successfully coordinated Bioinformatics National Certification (BINC) Examination, a grand challenge program of Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt. of India (2014-17). He has more than 24 years of teaching experience in various courses in Bioinformatics such as molecular evolution, systems biology, statistical computing and next-generation sequencing along with core subjects in biological sciences. He has published more than 40 papers in reputed international journals such as Molecular Biology & Evolution, Briefings in Bioinformatics, Carcinogenesis, Life Sciences and Asian Journal of Psychiatry.
