The Department currently offers an attractive integrated 5-year M.Sc in Physics (semester CBCS system) with modern laboratories. The Department also runs a regular 2-years (4-semester) M.Sc (Physics) with three different specializations viz., Optics, Condensed Matter Physics and Electronics. In addition, every semester M.Phil (Physics) and PhD (Physics) scholars are admitted through a national-level admission test. Suitable scholarships are provided for students admitted to Integrated M.Sc, and regular M.Phil & PhD scholars.
GENERAL INFORMATION The School of Physical Chemical and Applied Sciences consists of the following three departments: • Department of Physics, • Department of Chemistry • Department of Earth Sciences. The School is uniquely placed to conduct interdisciplinary teaching and research activities. All the three departments offer 5-year Integrated M.Sc programs. The Integrated 5-year M.Sc program is especially designed to motivate the young students to take a scientific research carrier (Research & Development / Industries). In the past, the candidates have excelled in obtaining placements (R & D labs / Universities / Industries) both in India and abroad. All the Departments have distinguished faculty members with excellent laboratory and computational facilities. A high percentage of M.Sc students of the School have cleared the CSIR-UGC NET and / or the GATE examinations. All the Departments have been recognized for special funding by DST under the Fund for Improvement of Science & Technology Infrastructure (FIST) program and also the Special Assistance Program (SAP) of UGC. The faculty members of the Departments have received major research project grants from various national and international funding agencies like DST, AICTE, UGC, DRDO, DAE, INSA, CSIR and INCPAR.
FACILITIES IN PONDICHERRY UNIVERSITY The University central library has over 1.12 lakhs of books and over 7,100 journals and also excellent on-line journal referring facilities. Internet access is provided by 2MBPS wireless link. The University is linked with UGC-INFONET through VSAT and provides on-line access to about 5000 e-journals. The Central Instrumentation Facility has electronics shop, mechanical shop and glass blowing shop to undertake any type of repair, and maintenance of scientific instruments in addition to the latest sophisticated analytical instruments in spectroscopy, microscopy, magnetism and virtual instrumentation systems. Excellent hostel facilities are available inside the campus for both boys and girls. A health center functions for the benefit of students and staff. An ambulance is also available. Two canteens are available in the campus. A post office and an Indian bank operates with in the campus. SYSTEM OF EDUCATION The University of Pondicherry follows CBCS system (choice-based credit system). Under this system, the students have a good deal of freedom in designing their own curriculum to suit their needs. The students can also take as many courses as they can handle subject to a maximum of 30 credits in a semester. Efficient students may complete the program in less than five years. Each program will have a set of courses that a student must complete to get the degree. These are called hardcore courses. The students can take soft-core courses offered in any department as long as they fulfill the prerequisites to suit their needs. SELECTION PROCEDURE All candidates should appear and qualify the admission test (for Integrated M.Sc) conducted by Pondicherry University.
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE to STUDENTS / FELLOWSHIPS All candidates who have admitted to the Integrated M.Sc program of Pondicherry University are eligible to receive a scholarship of Rs. 750/- per month during first semester and next five semesters depending on their performance in the previous semester.
Eligibility Criteria for Integrated M.Sc Program A pass in higher secondary or equivalent (central / state board) with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry as compulsory subjects with at least 50% of marks.
