Puducherry is situated on the Coromandal coast, 160 km south of Chennai. It is now a growing city and the capital of the Union Territory bearing the same name Puducherry, which attracted the French to settle here two centuries ago. Puducherry still carries several marks of French culture and heritage. Sri Aurobindo settled here and along with his disciple, the Mother, explored and practiced spirituality. The Aurobindo Ashram continues to attract followers and tourists from all over the world to Puducherry. It is also the place where the national poet Shri Subramania Bharathiar and Bharathidasan, a staunch disciple of Bharathiar, wrote several of their master pieces that fanned the flames of freedom and also enriched modern Tamil literature. Some of the other places worth seeing are Auroville, Beaches, Backwaters, Lakes and Gardens, Temples, Churches and Mosques, Heritage Buildings and Monuments. Puducherry Tourism provides more detailed information in this regard.
