The Tangkhul tribe is one of the oldest and chief tribes in Manipur. They inhabit Ukhrul District. The Tangkhul tribe is well known for their colourful dress and costume, and for their lively folk dance and music. Light and dark brown is a formidable colour combination that easily identifies the Tangkhuls from other tribes. The Tangkhul were primarily an agricultural community. They were a hardworking tribe who gave their best, physically as well as mentally, to whatever they did and the rest they left it to the benevolence of Ameowa. Then they enjoyed whatever they got out of their pursuit, making life meaningful in time and honor that the great Reisangchonmi had given for them. The ancestors were agriculturists and hence the annual festivals are associated with the year-round seasonal agricultural activities. All festivals are associated with sacred religious rituals and strict codes of conduct for all the feasts. For every step of agriculture process, there exist an accompanying form of ceremony or ritual and celebration. Some of the major festivals that the contemporary Tangkhul celebrate are displayed in this exhibition.
