The University Library named after ANANDA
RANGAPILLAI was established in September 1986 and it serves
the students, Research Scholars, Members of the Faculty
and Non- Teaching Staff of the University. It functions
on all the days of the week (i.e. 9:30 A.M. to 8:30 P.M.
on week days and 9:30 A.M. to 5:30 P.M. on weekly holidays).
Reprographic and photocopying facilities, E-Journals access
service, Internet access service, E-mail service and CD-ROM
Journals Databases access service are provided to the Students,
Research scholars and Faculty. The University Library has
a collection of 1,19,035 Books and 7,597 Bound Back- Volumes
of Journals. The Library has 3250 Theses, 472 current print
journals (Foreign Journals 279 and Indian Journals 190)
and E-Journals in various subjects have been subscribed
for the calendar year 2007 as on 31/03/2007. The Library
has a centrally airconditioned Journals Reading Hall, Theses
& Dissertation Halls & UN Depository Section.
Membership
The Library has a total number of 1162 members
on its roll which includes the Students, Research Scholars,
Faculty, officers and Non-Teaching staff of the University.
A number of persons from other institutions are also using
the Library resources for their Research/Study purpose/
entrepreneurial purpose.
Reference Services
A staff member of the University Library is
always available in the reference Section to answer all
enquiries about the Library stack, services and Reference
queries. Information can be obtained by personal call to
the Library, by telephone or by letter. The answers may
be immediately obtained about the library collection materials
or else the Librarian, Deputy/Assistant Librarians can suggest
alternative sources. This service is generally available
to Research Scholars & the Faculty members.
Inter-Library loan
The University Library arranges to get books
and other information which are not available in the Library,
on Inter-Library Loan, from other University Libraries on
request from the members.
U.N. Deposit Library
The Library has been recognised by the United
Nations Organisation as one of its Deposit Centres. Publications
of the U.N.O are being received by the University Library
and kept in separate air conditioned Hall for use by the
members. Rs.8,922/- expenditure has been incurred for U.N.Document
for the year 2006- 07.
Computer Application to Library Operations Services
The University Library has twenty-eight Computer
Systems which includes one Unix Server, One Novell Server
and One CD-ROM Server with 7 Drive CD Tower and 2 Nos. of
CD-MIRROR Server for Modernising and Automating Library
operations and services. The work on the creation of bibliographic
database of books, theses, periodicals holdings and United
Nations Documents holdings is almost complete. Barcoding
of Library books, Theses, etc., have been completed. Complete
automation of Library activities has been accomplished issuing
Membership Identification Cards with the help of barcoding
equipments. The University Library is being linked to National
Network of Libraries viz. INFLIBNET Centre, an interminents
centre of U.G.C, Ahmedabad.
Acquisition System
The Acquisition work of the Library has been
Computerised. The status of the books, like books approved
/ ordered / received / invoiced / accessioned/ Catalogued
etc., can be known at any moment. The recently added books
to the Library collection are being hosted in the Pondicherry
University website and the same is updated every week.
Serial Control system
The Journal Subscription work of the Library
has been computerised. The Bibliographic details of Journals
approved/ordered/invoiced/issues received from the Publishers
& Suppliers are entered in the Computer and are available
for Online Access and hence, the Students, Research Scholars
and Faculty can know the availability of and the gaps in
supply of any of the Journals, at any time.
Circulation System
The Circulation System of the Library has
been computerised. The details of books on loan/ on stack
are now available On-line. The status of the books like
those under issue, under reservation, on shelf in the stack
section, in the reference section, in the departmental collection,
sent for binding, missing, etc., can be known from the Online
circulation system. Students can reserve the books through
the computer.

These databases can be accessed by the users in what is
called OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) by using the
computer terminal kept in the Library separately for the
purpose.
Print-Journals
472 Print Journals (279 Foreign Journals and
190 Indian Journals) have been subscribed
for the year 2007.
E-Journals
The UGC Infonet consortium of INFLIBNET
Centre have subscribed E-Journals and have
provided IP based access to E-Journals. In
addition to these E-Journals, the University
has subscribed to current E-Journals in
various subject areas.
Online Journals
The Print medium journals subscribed by the
University Library are found to be inadequate
to meet the information needs of the
Researchers, Students and Faculty members
of the University. Since, the University
Library operations and services have been
computerised and Internet access facility
has also been provided to the Library users
and the various Schools/Departments/
Centres have been networked by Campuswide
Intranet, On-line journals are
subscribed to supplement the print journals,
to help the academic development of the
University to a large extent. The UGC
INFONET E-Journals Consortium have also
made access to a large number of E-Journal
available to the University Academic
Community.

provided online access to the E-Journals
subscribed under UGC INFONET
PROGRAMME by the INFLIBNET Centre of
UGC.

EBSCO Publishing Journals (Online)
EBSCO Publishing Ltd an Online publishing
company of U.S.A. provides access to the
electronic journal databases viz. Business
Source Elite and Academic Search Elite.
The Business Source Elite is an aggregate
collection of 1122 Business and Economics
Full Text journals and the Academic Search
Elite is supporting core curriculum, degree
requirements and elective classes covering
most academic areas of study such as Social
Sciences, Humanities, Communications,
Computer Science, Medical Sciences
etc.The annual subscription cost paid for the
online journal databases of EBSCO
publishing is Rs.7.59 Lakhs (US $
16500)(Non-Plan A/c 2006-07).

CD-ROM Journals Database Service
The University Library is having CDROM
Network server with 7 CD-ROM
drives which is used for browsing the
abstracts and bibliographical information
about the articles. To view the full text, 4
Nos. of stand-alone PCs with 24X CD-ROM
drive are used. Laser print-out facilities for
retrieved full text articles and dot matrix print
facility for print-out of abstracts from CDROM
data bases are available for the users.
Article Indexing
The Library has been
preparing Computerised database of indices
of articles contained in the Indian Journals
(in Social Sciences) subscribed by the
Library. The users can retrieve the relevant
bibliographic details of the articles of their
area of specialisation/interest.
