The beginning of the Department of Tourism Studies (DTS) can be traced back to 1991 when, with the seed financial support from the Central Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, a Centre for Tourism Studies (CTS) was established in Pondicherry University as a nodal centre for advanced tourism education and research. The CTS was elevated to the status of a Department during 2005-06.

The Department has a track record of excellent placements for its students. The students get an early exposure to the industrial life during the two month Summer Internship Training. Some of the Alumni of the DTS have reached the middle and senior level manageial positions in multinational travel companies. Some have chosen to become educators and researchers while a few others have opted to the entrepreneurs.

Companies that recently visited the campus and recruited the students include: Thomas Cook, SOTC, Carlson Wagonlit, Orbit, Ramoji Film City, Dakshina Chitra, Le Meridian, Kingfisher Airlines, Jet Airways, Orbit Tours & Travels, Ascon Travels, Stic Travels, etc.

MBA Tourism

The Department of Tourism Studies offers a two year full-time Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme specializing in Tourism. Admission to the MBA (Tourism) programme is based on an entrance test conducted by the University, followed by group discussion and personal interview. The Entrance
Examination (2 hours duration) all consists of 100 multiple choice objective questions in FOUR sections with 25 questions in each section:

Section A: English Comprehension
Section B: Numerical Ability
Section C: Test of Reasoning
Section D: General Awareness

The Written test is along the lines of any competitve test like CAT, MAT, etc. conducted for admissiion to management programs. Students desirous of joining the programme are requested to visit the University’s website for the latest information.

Ph.D. in Tourism


Based on the vacanies available with eligible guides and the field of specialization that a prospective scholar wants to pursue, the admission procedure involves:
(i) a written examination and
(ii) a personal interview
The Written examination consists of 100 multiple choice objective questiions in FOUR sections of 25 questions each:

Section A: Verbal Ability of English Comprehension
Section B: Problem Solving & Logical Reasoning
Section C: Research Methods & Data Interpretation
Section D: General Awareness related to Business & Tourism

Infrastructure facilities

Computer Lab with educational softwares and uninterrupted high-speed internet connectivity; OHP/LCD projectors and other multimedia aids; well-equipped class rooms; online and print journal database, etc. are
available.

Mission

The mission of the DTS is threefold:

  • To train undergraduates to successfully assume leadership positions in the tourism and related industries;
  • To undertake and disseminate contemporary applied research and extend consultancy services in tune with the growing needs of the industry;
  • To participate actively in the corporate life of the University and also the local community.

Placements

The following leading companies from the tourism and travel sector have been the regular visitors to the DTS for Campus Placement. The companies like Thomas Cook, Kingfisher Airlines, Jet Airways, SOTC Kuoni India, Cox & Kings, Orbitz Leisure & Travel Ltd., Ascon Travels, Hi-tours, Makemytrip.com, Stic Travels, Carlson Wagonlit, Ramoji Film City, IDBI, Sonata Software, ICICI, Dakshina Chitra, Sahara Group and so on are the major recruiters. These companies also offer summer internships to the first year students.
