The Department of Library and Information Science was started during the academic year 2007-2008. At present the Department offers the professional Masters Degree M.L.I.Sc. programme. The course duration is two years - four semesters. Candidates who have passed any Bachelor's Degree examination from a recognized university under 10+2+3 system and who have secured at least 50% marks in aggregate in Part III (main subjects) are eligible to apply seeking admission to this course. In case of candidates belonging to SC/ST category, relaxation in the percentage of marks shall be as per the University Guidelines issued from time to time.

Programme of Study:

M.L.I.Sc (Master of Library & Information Science) (Full-Time)

Ph.D. (Library & Information Science) will be offered in due course

Major objectives of the M.L.I.Sc Programme are:

  • To familiarize students with basic concepts of information and its communication in society,
  • To learn advanced information processing techniques and develop capability in retrieving information by applying different search techniques,
  • To acquaint students with the activities and services of different information systems and introduce the repackaging and consolidation techniques,
  • To introduce the different methods and techniques of research,
  • To identify and learn, the major issues in the development of new technology in the libraries,
  • To develop skills in using computer and communication technology; and,
  • To introduce modern management techniques to students to manage Libraries and Information Centres effectively.

Entrance Examination:

Candidates seeking admission to the programme shall be required to appear for a 2 hours written examination conducted by the University during the last week of May or in the first week of June or the date announced by the University. The written examination carrying 100 marks shall consist of two parts, viz. - Part A: Objective type. (Multiple choice questions for 50 marks) and Part B: Detailed answers carrying 50 marks. While objective type questions in Part A shall be to test mental ability, aptitude and general knowledge, the detailed answer type questions for 50 marks in Part B shall be on current topics of interest (general), book publishing, book industry, authors, libraries, reading habits, etc.

Selection for Admission:

The selection of students shall be made on merit in each category of reservations giving 50% weightage to the marks obtained in Part III subjects at degree level (aggregate of I, II and III year) and 50% weightage for marks scored at the entrance examination.

Intake

The total number of Candidates to be admitted to the programme would be 20 (Twenty) only.

Placements:

Master's degree programme is a professional course and there is a great demand for candidates in the job market. Students with M.L.I.Sc. degree get placed as Librarian, Information Scientist, and Knowledge Managers. Candidates who qualify with NET, SLET can get placed as Lecturers or pursue research in the field of Library & Information Science.

The Course content:

Few of the courses that will be covered in the programme are:

Information Resources, Knowledge Organisation, Introduction to Information Technology, Management of Information Centres, Communication Skills & Public Relations (PR), Information Storage & Retrieval, Research Methods, Information Technology (Practice), Marketing of Information Products and Services, Knowledge Management, Digital Libraries, and any two optionals of Web Technology, E-Publishing, Informetrics, Industrial Information System, Technical Writing.

The students will have a project. The students should also undergo an Internship for 20 days in a reputed Library / Information Centre during the summer vacation, between 2nd & 3rd Semester.
