ORIENTATION PROGRAMME
The Orientation programmes have been designed to the newly appointed teachers of colleges and universities who have less than six years teaching experience. The curriculum for these programmes have been organised in four components as suggested by the UGC.
Component A : Awareness of linkages between society, environment, development and education
Component B : Philosophy of education, Indian education system and pedagogy
Component C : Resource awareness and knowledge generation
Component D : Management and personality development
While component ‘A’ aims at helping the teacher to realise the larger perspectives of education and the role of the teacher in a society, component ‘B’ is to impart basic skills that a teacher needs for effective classroom teaching. The component ‘C’ aims at helping the teachers to be self sufficient in keeping themselves continuously abreast of new knowledge and techniques, processes, methods and source of knowledge. The component ‘D’ facilitates the teacher to facilitate with the organisation and the management of the college/university. It aims to make the teachers to understand the interlocking of the various sub system within the college/university and appreciate the role and functions of a teacher within the system and they may develop their own personality.
REFRESHER COURSE
As envisaged in the National Policy of Education, the refresher courses in different subjects are organised with the co-operation of the respective departments in the Pondicherry University. The refresher courses are meant for teachers of colleges and Universities with more than five years of experience. These courses will provide opportunities for in service teachers to keep abreast of the latest advances in subjects concerned. They also provide a forum for them to exchange their experiences with the peer group and to mutually interact with each other.
ELIGIBILITY
Lecturers working in the Universities and colleges, who are included in the list of college under section 2(f) of the UGC Act., even though they may not yet be fit under 12-B of the UGC Act., may be invited to participate in the Orientation and Refresher courses. The teachers of colleges, which do not yet come within the purview of section 2(f), but have been affiliated to a University for atleast 5 years, be permitted to participate in the courses.
(I) FOR ORIENTATION PROGRAMME
Newly appointed lecturers upto six years of continuous service and all those teachers who require orientation programme for getting higher grade will be allowed.
(II) FOR REFRESHER COURSE
Participation in orientation programme is a prerequiste for admission to refresher course. There after, with a gap of one year they can opt for refresher course. Also, there should be a minimum gap of one year between two refresher courses.
(III) Adhoc/temporary teachers who have been working for atleast one year as lecturer is permitted to participate in orientation programme. However, part-time teachers are not eligible.
(IV) REGISTRATION FEE
Every participant shall pay an admission fee (non-refundable) of Rs.500/-
SELECTION AND ENROLLMENT :
Teachers interested in attending the orientation/refresher courses may download the application and guidelines from the University website www.pondiuni.edu.in. ,forward the same through their respective head of the institution, and the selection will be made in accordance with the Guidelines of UGC. Receipt of the application and the selection will be intimated soon by e-mail.
ACCOMMODATION
Hostel Accommodation is available in ASC Premises.
DURATION
Orientation programme will be of 4 weeks duration with minimum of 24 working days and 144 contact hours (6 hours a day); refresher course will be of 3 weeks duration with minimum of 18 working days and 108 contact hours (6 hours a day) excluding Sunday and public holidays.
EVALUATION OF PARTICIPANTS
At the last week of the programme experts preferably external will assess the participants on the basis of multiple choice objective test, overall response/Seminar/Project/Participation, etc. and give the grade to the participants. The grade will be indicated on the course certificate.
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
First class railway fare will be paid for journey beyond 500 kms on production of railway tickets or any other documents in support that the teacher has actually undertaken the journey by first class from the place of duty to Pondicherry. Others will be paid second class railway fare with sleeper charges for attending the course. A daily allowance of Rs. 150 (Rupees One hundred and fifty only) will be paid to the outstation participants towards accommodation and food and Rs.50/- per day (except holidays/sunday) to local participants.
FACILITIES AVAILABLE:
• Air-conditioned class room and with latest audio visual equipment facilities such as LCD, OHP , slide projectors
• Separate computer Lab with internet facility to enable the teacher participants to get hold of the latest information then and there
• Separate Library with over 1000 books and with magazines and daily newspapers
• In addition to these the participants are allowed to access the University Central Library & Computer Centre.
DETAILS OF ORIENTATION AND REFRESHER COURSES:
The UGC-Academic Staff College of the Pondicherry University has so far organized 90 Orientation Programmes, which include three Orientation courses on IT, and one orientation course on Value Education. It has organized 124 Refresher courses in various subjects. This year, it has organized four orientation programmes, 12 refresher courses in various subjects, one workshop for college principals, one workshop for resource persons of the orientation courses and four batches of short term courses for non teaching staff of the university. In total 488 participants benefited.
The orientation courses were designed as per the 10th plan revised guidelines of the UGC. Topics related to Information Technology have been adequately covered in the time table. The resource persons invited to interact with the participants were ones who have not only achieved excellence in their own areas of study, but who also had clear and profound awareness of the issues that are involved in the whole spectrum of teaching and learning. All the sessions were carefully designed, so as to motivate the teacher participants towards the objectives of the course. The sessions were found to be very interactive. Apart from the invited resource person, the participants themselves contributed to the educative nature of the course.
The topics covered in the orientation courses were highly innovative and the resource persons highly enriched the knowledge of the participants. The topics like Educational Technology, Creation of Indian Identity, ICT in Higher Education, Memory and creativity, Curriculum designing and Evaluation, Lecturing Skills and Teaching Techniques, Environmental Education, Personality Development, Computer Assisted Instruction, Communication Technology, Internet usage in Education, Thinking Styles and their role in Teaching, Concept of Education, Environmental Education and Microteaching were liked very much by the participants. Seminar sessions were organised, wherein all the participants have presented their papers and their performance was good. The Participants were given an opportunity to prepare daily report on the proceedings of the sessions. They have also submitted assignments on their topic of interest.
Four sessions were allotted for the purpose of making the use of computer centre lab and university library. Participants had a Micro- Teaching session which was Video taped, this proved to be a good exercise for the teachers to get a feed back on their abilities to use the LCD projector and video based skills and also learn more about their lecturing skills. Invariably, all the participants expressed their happiness with the micro teaching session. The course was organised with complete involvement and dedication, so as to motivate the teacher participants towards professional development.
