The UGC– Academic Staff College of Pondicherry University was established in 1987 and it is situated at Pondicherry University campus, Kalapet, Puducherry, India. It is situated 160 kms away from Chennai on the east coast road. It is 13 Kms away from the Pondicherry main bus stand and Pondicherry railway station.

It is a inter university institute catering to the needs of all college and University teachers to achieve goals of higher education and keep abreast of the latest developments in their specific subjects.

The National Education Policy (1986) recognised the important role of teachers in higher education. During the 7th Plan, UGC conceived the scheme of Academic Staff Orientation and as on the date there are 57 State and Central Universities Academic Staff Colleges (ASC) are available in india. They are conceived with a view to plan, organise, implement, monitor and evaluate Academic Staff Orientation Programmes for newly appointed college and university teachers and refresher programmes for senior teachers.

OBJECTIVES:

The following important objectives are to

• understand the significance of education in general and higher education in particular, in the global and Indian contexts:
• understand the linkages between education and economic and socio-economic and cultural development with particular reference to the Indian polity where democracy, secularism and social equity are the basic tenets of society:
• acquire and improve basic skills of teaching at the college/university level to achieve the goals of higher education:
• be aware of the latest developments in their specific subjects;
• understand the organization and management of a college/university and to perceive the role of teachers in the total system,
• utilise opportunities for the development of personality, initiative and creativity.

FACULTY PROFILE :

The University Grants Commission sanctioned an Academic Staff College to Pondicherry University in 1987 with a Professor Director, one Reader and one Lecturer. It started functioning in December 1987. Since its inception the college earned reputation through excellent performance.
